What is an AADHAAR Card?

UIDAI issued the first Aadhaar card in January 2009, containing a unique 12-digit number confirming the holder’s identity as a citizen of India. By the end of 2024, more than 1.38 billion Aadhaar numbers have been issued.

Using their Aadhaar number, individuals can authenticate themselves using biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans) or a one-time password (OTP) sent to their mobile phones.

What is e-AADHAAR?

Using E-Aadhaar, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) digitally signs a digital copy of your Aadhaar card. This document contains your 12-digit Aadhaar number, your details, a photograph, and biometric information, all included on your Aadhaar card.

As with the physical Aadhaar card, the e-Aadhaar can be downloaded from the UIDAI website or through the mAadhaar app.

Benefits of e-Aadhaar:

  • Digital format: The Aadhaar card can be stored and accessed digitally.
  • Password protected: A password protects the PDF.
  • Legally valid: E-Aadhaar is just as valid as physical Aadhaar cards.
  • Masked Aadhaar option: You can download a version that hides the first 8 digits of the Aadhaar number.

The online version of Aadhaar can also be used for government services, identity verification, and other official purposes.
